IBERSOL | Annual Report 2021
ANNUAL REPORT 2021 Burger King closed 2021 with 119 restaurants having opened 12 new units in Portugal. The main investment was in drive thru restaurants, but a considera- ble investment was also made to refurbish some of the older style restaurants in theNorte Shopping (Matosinhos) and Pombal. More units have included home delivery services, which currently apply to 59 restaurants. 2021 marked the 20th anniversa- ry of Burger King in Portugal, and a full rebranding of the concept. The change is taking place in phases in the restaurants, and at the moment 25 units have com- pleted their rebranding process. Another project that marked 2021 was the elimination of plastic ma- terials used for packaging, and for the utensils provided to the PORTUGAL customers, as well as in straws, cutlery, bags, lids, and cups. The brand has continued to in- vest in increasingly aggressive promotional campaigns, with burgers for just 1€ or Menus for 3,95€. At the same time, it contin- ued to innovate in the premium range, creating a new (Gourmet) segment through the launch of the “King Selection” range, us- ing high-end products, such as Angus meat, and distinguished ingredients, such as truffles and mushrooms. Burger King is increasingly mar- keting itself as a brand that wants to democratise alternative consumption and has increased its vegetarian range, adding Veg- etable Nuggets to the Vegeta- ble Whopper and the new Long Vegetable. 105
